Zamfara: Impeachment of deputy governor, Ali for not signing up with APC discouraging– Saraki

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki has condemned the impeachment of Alhaji Mahdi Ali as Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, saying the development did not follow due procedures.

In a statement on his Facebook page, on Friday, the former legislator alleged that Barr. Mahdi Ali was impeached by the State Assembly over his rejection to discard the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the judgment All Progressives Congress, APC.

Saraki, who believed that such move would posture harmful threat to the nation’s democracy, said the deposed deputy guv has right to freedom of association and should be permitted to picked his party.

He stated, “At this time, when all leaders and stakeholders in our young democracy need to be pursuing and motivating all implies to follow the Constitution, the abrupt impeachment of the Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Alhaji Mahdi Ali, without following due procedure and even if he declined to sign up with the ruling party is truly frustrating.

“We can not attempt to overturn the liberty of association of any individual– whether a sitting public office holder or a routine citizen. This flexibility enables any private to freely join or leave a political celebration when he considers fit. The ruling celebration must not and can not attempt to brow-beat a public workplace holder to join their party or to bend to their political leanings, just due to the fact that they have the bulk in the legislature.

“We should maintain the stability of our democratic institutions, otherwise, we risk setting hazardous constitutional and political precedents that can spiral.

“I must applaud Barr. Mahdi Ali, for his courage and persistence in the face of frustrating hardship. He has actually revealed that he is a young and progressive leader with true conviction. He stands as a beacon of hope for many young Nigerians”.

DAILY POST remembers that the Zamfara State legislators had on Wednesday impeached the deputy guv over some accusations leveled against him.

Few hours after the impeachment, the State Governor, Bello Matawalle, chose Senator Muhammad Hassan Nasiha as the brand-new deputy guv of the State.
