Why Nigerian youths engage in Yahoo-yahoo, ritual killings â $” Singer, M.I Abaga

A Nigerian singer and rapper, Jude Abaga has actually explained why some Nigerian youths turn to internet scams, ritual killings and other criminal offenses.

Abaga, who is popularly referred to as M.I, opined that Nigerian youths are not lazy.

The artist consulted with DAILY POST on the sideline of Ogun TechSummit, arranged by an IT expert, Olaniyi Ayoola, in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Reacting to why some Nigerian youths have decided to engage in Yahoo-yahoo, ritual killings and other abhorrent crimes instead of taking part in legal companies, Abaga retorted that the situation was as result of the youths’ inability to secure jobs.

“The youths of Nigeria have been trying to find jobs. For anyone to make a claim that they slouch, the individual should be able to take a look at the indices. You can’t simply make that sort of opinion without having the financial structure within which that’s real.

“You can’t say youths slouch and don’t wish to work if unemployment is high. The joblessness rate tells you that there are no jobs. You will see that there has been major gross joblessness for a long time if you look at the job market. Anytime that there’s gross joblessness, there’s likewise a tendency for there to be high criminal activity rate, which is what we are experiencing.

“But the high crime rate is not the indication of youths’s attitudes. It’s a sign that there is an ecosystem where there is no chance for them to work.

“And, because they can’t work, and they need to consume, that’s why they need to find a way to endure. That is what we are experiencing in Nigeria today,” he specified.

Abaga advised the youths to take advantage of the opportunities provided by information innovation.

He called for greater partnership in between “creatives and the tech space”, stating, “I believe the creatives are sort of left as the unserious individuals of the society. What we want to reveal today is that creatives make everything better. They run the tech space.”
