Supposed killing of Igbos: Intersociety supporting IPOB, ESN– Nigerian Army
The Nigerian Army (NA) states it has been alerted of groups and people “masquerading” as civil rights organizations.
The military system stated their activities have “backed the mindless criminalities of proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, Eastern Security Network (ESN).”
Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu states Intersociety’s most current report is an effort to incite the general public against the Army.
In a statement on Thursday, he noted that the organization had tacitly urged anarchy in the South-East through “spurious accusations”.
“Civil rights groups, International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, otherwise called InterSociety, has an antecedent of making dubious and bogus claims, focused on supporting the activities of outlawed groups in Southern Nigeria.”
The spokesman called the allegation that in 14 months, soldiers burned “100 Igbo neighborhoods, assaulted not less than 1000 home homes coming from unarmed civilians and destroyed property valued at N40billion” as propaganda.
“The report also alleged that security operatives killed 1150 defenceless and innocent ndigbos within the stated period.
The Army insists it is a “cherished national institution” that has combated at different fronts for the defence of the sovereignty and unity of Nigeria and would not allow “dissidents and their accomplices” to undermine nationwide security.
Nwachukwu said the NA performs its operations in line with global best practices and would not be associated with the extra-judicial killings and abuse of fundamental human rights.
“More uneasy is the reality that companies such as InterSociety turn their eyes the other way, when banned groups like IPOB/ESN powerfully deny law abiding residents their inalienable rights to flexibility of movement through their illegal sit-at-home order.”
The declaration encouraged Intersociety and “and their likes” to re-channel their issues to the “criminal offenses devoted by lawbreakers, who snatch, abuse, maim kill and cannibalize their traditional rulers, fellow ndigbos and other innocent Nigerians under the guise of struggle.”
