Some Neglected Tropical Diseases are endemic in Yobe LGs– Govt raises alarm

Dr. Babagana Kundi Machina, the Executive Secretary, Yobe State Primary Health Care Board has raised issue over the unfavorable impact of Neglected Tropical Diseases, (NTDs), that are endemic to the 17 city government locations of the State.

He raised the issue at a media briefing to mark this year’s World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day in Damaturu.

He mentioned that some of these illness that are endemic to the local governments include: lymphatic filariasis (LF); Onchocerciasis (river loss of sight), soil transmitted helminthiases (STH); trachoma and schistosomiasis, among others.

According to him, the illness are presently among the 20 illness determined, in addition to defined as Neglected Tropical Diseases, which are the focus of the World Health Organization’s road map for elimination.

The Executive Secretary likewise noted that in partnership with other partners, the Primary Health Care Board in the State has actually been successful in constructing new or restoring worn out sanitation facilities in public locations, constructed water centers in communities and schools, drug supply chain management and mass Drug Administration (MDA).
