Enugu: Mmaku community phases protest, demands elimination of conventional ruler

The indigenes of Agunese Mmaku Autonomous community, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State have asked the State Government to withdraw the certificate of recognition issued to their Traditional Ruler, Igwe Cyprian Nevobasi.

They also demanded that the Staff of Office offered to him should be gathered, arguing that Igwe Nevobasi is not fit to occupy the workplace.

They made the need on Thursday in Enugu when they staged a peaceful protest to register their grievances.

Speaking on behalf of the Community, Mr. Vincent Okafor said they were objecting oppressive leadership of the Igwe, as well as baseless arrest and detention of one Mr. Dave Okeke under a trump-up charge.

Okafor attracted Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to save them from the hands of the Traditional Ruler, who he said enforced himself as the Traditional Ruler of Agunese Mmaku, despite outright rejection by the people.

“On 30th December 2021, our people schedule for an election of brand-new executive members into our town Union since the period of the incumbent executive expired that day.

“We notified Enugu State commissioner for Local Government who supposed to observe the election; however they failed to attend.

“Unfortunately, Igwe Cyprian disrupted the process with the lightweight excuse that he got a call from the Commissioner instructing that election needs to not hold over the killing of someone in a similar workout; which was incorrect.

“But his primary reason for truncating the election is that he has actually seen he can no longer force his option candidate on the people.

“He understood that we have through a 16-man committee requested the outgoing Town Union Executives to render a financial report, render the account of their stewardship; which up-to this minute they have actually refrained from doing.

“Among the money wasted was the N5m offered to communities by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for community projects and approximately this minute, no one has actually discussed to Agunese Mmaku autonomous community what they utilized the money for.

“Not only that, there are numerous unaccounted money that went into the community.

“For instance, Setraco paid the neighborhood for the site where they excavate sand for roadway construction. They paid Igwe and Town union, and we did not understand just how much they were paid or what they utilized the cash to do up till date.

“We are in problem, we are asking the Governor of Enugu State to come to our aid. we are asking the Enugu State commissioner of authorities to please leave our people alone.

“we have no unidentified shooters in our community. We have no ESN members in our neighborhood”, Okafor told.

He asked the state government to dissolve the caretaker committee established by the Traditional Ruler as he lacks the power to make up such committee and enable the community to elect their preferred leaders.

When called, the conventional ruler stated that he does not want to sign up with problems with anybody, adding that he remains the Igwe of the community and individuals must appreciate that.
