Police frown at increasing cases of rape, other criminal activities in Yobe

Garba Haruna, the Commissioner of Police, Yobe State Command, has resented the level at which cases of rape are raising in the state.

The CP raised the concern recently while fielding questions from newsmen in Damaturu, the state capital.

He kept in mind that in current times, rape cases in the state have increased astronomically, even higher than culpable homicide and heist with Potiskum and Gashu’a towns as the epicentre of the criminal offense.

Haruna associated poverty as one of the causative aspects as victims are mostly street hawkers from bad households.

“What we intend to do to stem the tide; is to sensitize members of the general public about the threats and unfavorable effects of rape”, he stated.

He mentioned that this can be accomplished by engaging standard along with spiritual leaders to admonish guardians, parents and caretakers not to engage their kids in street hawking as criminals are taking advantage of that to rape children.

“We also need to inform the offenders, the inappropriateness of their characters which is why most of the times when they (rapists) are detained and brought here, we do not joke with cases of rape. We get remand warrants and remand them in reformatories and courts in the state are also assisting with that”, he included.

On farmer-herder clashes, the authorities commissioner stated the command, under his stewardship, will partner with leaders from the clashing parties as a method of finding a convenient option to the recurring phenomenon.
