EPL: Arteta reveals regret after Partey picks up red card against Liverpool

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has stated his only remorse about Thomas Partey’s red card is that he will not be readily available for this weekend’s Premier League game against Burnley.

Partey was presented from the bench against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg regardless of only flying in from the Africa Cup of Nations.

The tie was finely balanced after the first-leg ended 0-0 at Anfield last week, with Granit Xhaka likewise getting red-carded after 24 minutes.

And Partey became the current Gunner to see red in the tie, picking up 2 yellow cards in less than 10 minutes as they lost 2-0 at the Emirates.

After the clash, Arteta was asked whether he was sorry for bringing Partey.

“No. Well I are sorry for that I can not use him now, but he made the effort to come and we had to play.

“He hasn’t had one single training session, Martin [Odegaard] Laca [ Lacazette] had a yellow card,” he declared.

“We had to decide and we had to use him,” Arteta said.

The Spaniard was then asked whether Partey’s red card might be put down to a mix of tiredness and jet lag.

He just responded, “No, I don’t believe so.”
