AFCON 2021: Why Nigeria needs to not lose to Guinea-Bissau in final Group D clash

Nigeria will undoubtedly play in the last 16 of the continuous Africa Cup of Nations.

That was verified after they beat Sudan 3-1 in their second Group D game last weekend.

The Super Eagles now top the group with 6 points, ahead of Egypt who have three points in 2nd place.

Both Guinea-Bissau and Sudan have one point each.

The last group fixtures will see Nigeria take on Guinea-Bissau, while Egypt play Sudan.

Augustine Eguavoen has hinted a number of times after the Sudan video game that he will be fielding his fringe gamers for what is essentially a dead rubber video game.

It is essential that complacency and overconfidence does not creep in.

There was a hint of that against the Falcons. Although Nigeria went 3 objectives up, they did not produce the sort of spellbinding screen that stunned Mohamed Salah and co in the opening game.

A few of the football was sluggish and it appeared the Nigerian gamers underestimated their opponents.

It will be a different ball video game on Wednesday. Guinea-Bissau are totally conscious that 4 points could see them receive the Round of 16, as one of the very best third-placed teams. And so, they will come out all set for fight. After all, they have nothing to lose.

If they catch Eguavoen’s males napping, another upset could be recorded at the AFCON.

That will not only draw in criticisms from fans and pundits, it will dent the confidence of the players ahead of their next game.

A win will be excellent. A draw might be appropriate. But no matter what happens, the Eagles can not pay for to lose.
