Stop establishing universities you can’t fund– SSANU to guvs

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities(SSANU )has warned governors against politicizing education.

The North East Zone informed them to stop establishing universities they can not money.

The caution becomes part of a communique released on Friday after a meeting in Maiduguri, the Borno capital.

SSANU National Vice President, Abdulkadir Isa urged the federal government at all levels to invest enormously in education.

“The disregard and bad financing of universities by some governors to the hinderance of teaching and research study is a matter that requires urgent attention”, it read.

The body condemned the formula utilized for sharing the N22.1 billion released by the Federal Government for the Earned Allowances– 75 per cent for teaching personnel and 25 per cent for non-teaching staff.

SSANU lamented that non-teaching systems in schools are being usurped by teaching personnel in offense of condition of service and establishment procedures.

On pending cases of earned allowances, the union advised Federal and State Governments of the 2009 agreement.

SSANU desires full execution along with the reflection in month-to-month salaries.

“We protest the forceful retirement of our members at the age of 60 in offense of the 65 years arrangement in state universities,” the communique included.

The members, nevertheless, expressed concern over insecurity and inflation in the nation.

They even more requested a law that will enable the inclusion of unions in university governing councils.
