Bauchi govt confiscates 3 trucks of charcoal
The Bauchi State Commissioner for Environment and Housing, Hamisu Shira, on Friday informed that the ministry confiscated three trucks loaded with charcoal at Nabardo in Toro Local Government Area of the state.
He stated this while addressing journalists in Bauchi, adding that the arrested trucks were heading for Kano and Borno States.
The confiscation of the trucks and arrests of suspected culprits, according to Shira, was made through collaborative efforts among the ministry, Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA) and the police.
The commissioner said it is not only illegal to fell trees in the state to make firewood, timber or charcoals but also prohibited as a result of the environmental hazards the act is causing in the state.
Shira, therefore, urged people of the state to always report illegal felling of trees in their domains, submitting that tree felling leads to deforestation, which he said is dangerous for the environment.
According to the commissioner, “The ministry will reward anyone who exposes those who are into illegal felling of trees for firewood, timber or charcoals.
“Deforestation is very dangerous to the environment. We want to encourage planting of more trees. Those who plant trees will also be rewarded.”
