AFCON 2021: He couldn’t find his feet– Eguavoen reveals why he started Spain-based star

Super Eagles interim employer, Austine Eguavoen has provided factors for his choice to begin Umar Sadiq ahead of strikers in the squad.

The Super Eagles beat Guinea Bissau 2-0 on Wednesday to take all 9 points from their group stage matches, having beaten Egypt and Sudan in their earlier two games.

Sadiq put the Super Eagles ahead before captain Williams Troost-Ekong lashed onto a rebound from Moses Simon’s strike to make it two.

Umar Sadiq, who plays for Spain’s second division club Almeria had earlier missed out on some marvelous opportunities to put Eguavoen’s side ahead.

Eguavoen explained that Sadiq came into the tournament with a great record, scoring week in week for his club side.

“Umar Sadiq I kept speaking with him because he’s a player who has actually bet Roma, now he’s in Spain scoring objectives and the first 2 video games he can be found in he couldn’t truly discover his feet for whatever reason because he’s just coming into a huge tournament, perhaps it was too big,” Eguavoen informed his post-match press conference.

“However, I think he’s carried out well and we simply wished to start him today to see how he’ll respond and I think he did very well.”
