An Associate Professor of Mass Communication, Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, Uwaoma Uche has said that the media plays a critical function in the society, hence the need for objective and investigative reporting.

Uche, who is also the Abia State Chairman of Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria, ACSPN, disclosed this to journalists in Aba during the ACSPN Empowerment series programme with the theme, “The role of the Media, Government and Youths in Conflict Resolution”.

He decried that the infiltration of citizen journalists had wrecked a havoc on the noble Profession, as the quacks can go on social media to post unverified information.

The ACSPN Abia State Chairman decried further the level of rascality introduced into the profession by quacks, describing it as a rape of the profession.

Uche said, “Nigeria practices Freedom of Information, the act is in operation. The mass media operates without hitches but what is lacking most times is objective reporting. So many people are now into journalism.

“The media plays a critical role in the society. The media is the function of the society, whatever it projects affects the society”, Uche said.

Various resource persons, who spoke during the event which attracted scholars, students of Abia State Polytechnic, among other guests, said viewers, readers and listeners most times can’t spot the good report from the half baked ones.
