A former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, has thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for snubbing the South East in his appointment of new service chiefs.

Buhari had on Tuesday sacked his service chiefs and this came after many months of public pressure.

The old ones, who many Nigerians believe lost ideas on how to tackle the insecurity in the country, were replaced by Major-General Leo Irabor, Chief of Defence Staff; Major-General Ibrahim Attahiru, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral AZ Gambo, Chief of Naval Staff; and Air-Vice Marshal Isiaka Oladayo Amao, Chief of Air Staff.

But there was no one of Igbo extraction in the list, raising the speculations that the President purposely snubbed the South East in the major appointments.

“Gen Buhari, thanks for making us in Igboland feel, once more, that we are not fit to head any of the Security services,” Nwodo said in a terse statement, according to Vanguard.

Recall that the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina yesterday said that his principal felt it was the best time to remove the security heads and appoint new ones.

According to Adesina, “the President knew the time to do it and I believe the time has come and that is why it has been done.”

He added that the service chiefs did not resign as a result of a number of security failures under their tenure.
