Premier League confirms record number of positive Covid-19 cases

The Premier League has announced 18 new positive cases among players and club staff in the latest round of testing.

It is the highest number of positive cases in the league since testing began in August this year.

“The Premier League can today confirm that between Monday 21 December and Sunday 27 December, 1,479 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19,” read a statement released by the league on Tuesday.

“Of these, there were 18 new positive tests.

“Players or club staff who have tested positive will self-isolate for a period of 10 days.

“The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency.

“No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing.”

The news comes the day after Everton’s fixture with Manchester City was postponed by the league after City reported positive test results among a number of their players and club staff.

Since then, it has also been announced that nine EFL fixtures scheduled to take place on Tuesday evening have also been postponed due to positive Covid-19 tests.
